Observatory on Digital Disinformation

The Observatory on Digital Disinformation is the go-to resource for educators, young people, and anyone who wants to learn more about disinformation, social media, and science. We conduct randomized controlled trials to study digital disinformation. Here you’ll find resources, tools, and tips to help you navigate the digital world critically and mindfully.

Do you really believe it?

To believe, or not to believe, that is the question while we’re scrolling.

In this page, we’ve selected some news stories we found online. Put your skills to the test, click on a story, and tell us if you really believe it.

What we do

Science disinformation and Pseudoscience

We focus on science disinformation – that is, the type of disinformation based on pseudoscience, where ideas and opinions are presented as supported by rigorous research but, in fact, lack scientific support or are even anti-scientific.

MeSH Media Science & Health Literacy

We primarily address disinformation on topics such as health, climate, sustainability, and everything else that science deals with. Avoiding and countering scientific disinformation online requires media, science, and health literacy.

Digital Critical Reading

We use randomized controlled trials to test techniques for preventing and countering science disinformation. We test digital critical reading, click restraint, source verification, and the use of AI chatbots or browsers to read digital texts mindfully.
